Genomic tracing of epidemics and disease outbreaks

چکیده
Tracing the source of an infectious human disease can save lives. It allows for measures to be taken to prevent further spread of the disease. Although the mode of transmission for many human pathogens is known, it often remains difficult to trace the exact source of an outbreak of a disease with laboratory methods. Viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasites and protozoa can cause human diseases, but here we focus on bacterial pathogens. The currently used techniques to obtain DNA fingerprints of bacterial agents of infectious diseases frequently cannot discriminate between all bacterial strains of the same outbreak, making it impossible to follow the spread of the disease. A recent solution to this problem is the application of nextgeneration whole-genome sequencing techniques, which allows all available genetic information of each clinical isolate to be determined.

COVID-19 Outbreak in Africa: Lessons and Insights from the West African Ebola Virus Disease Epidemics
Over the years, the African continent has had to battle several outbreaks of infectious diseases in different countries. Some of the most deadly were the Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreaks that occurred in West Africa between 2014 and 2016 affecting Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone and, more recently, from 2018 to 2020 in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). In the era of the COVID-19 pand...
متن کاملEpidemics/Outbreaks of Methanol Poisoning
Epidemics of methanol poisoning happen across the globe. There are prognostic factors associated with morbidity or mortality from methanol poisoning. Recently we have compared retrospective observational case series of methanol-poisoned patients from Norway (1979 and 2002-2005), Estonia (2001) and Tunisia (2003/2004), and patients from two different centers in Iran (Teheran 2004-2009 and Mashha...
متن کاملEbola viral disease: What should be done to combat the epidemic in 2014?
Ebola virus disease (EVD) was defined first in 1976. Since then, more than 24 epidemics have been reported from Africa, predominantly with the Zaire species. On 21 March 2014, the current West Africa outbreak was reported by the World Health Organization, the largest one ever recorded. The Congo epidemic was reported in July 2014. It was considered that the two epidemics had unrelated origins w...
متن کاملMathematical modeling, analysis and simulation of Ebola epidemics
Mathematical models are the most important tools in epidemiology to understand previous outbreaks of diseases and to better understand the dynamics of how infections spread through populations. Many existing models closely approximate historical disease patterns. This article investigates the mathematical model of the deadly disease with severe and uncontrollable bleeding, Ebola which is...
متن کاملPredicting undetected infections during the 2007 foot-and-mouth disease outbreak.
Active disease surveillance during epidemics is of utmost importance in detecting and eliminating new cases quickly, and targeting such surveillance to high-risk individuals is considered more efficient than applying a random strategy. Contact tracing has been used as a form of at-risk targeting, and a variety of mathematical models have indicated that it is likely to be highly efficient. Howev...
